Aptera 2e pre-production photos, new details

In March of last year, Aptera announced it had done all the development necessary to head to production, and that all it needed was to move into acquiring the right equipment and workforce to do so. Soon after the company revealed that a new infusion of $24 million in cash had been acquired, and then Aptera revealed an updated design for the original Typ-1 called the 2e. Now a pre-production example has been photographed in testing, and some new details revealed.

The photos were taken by a forum member at ApteraForum, who also asked questions of the Aptera engineers at a demonstration event.

Mitsubishi confirms Lancer Sportback GTS and Ralliart for U.S.

The rally-car wars just got a little hotter, as Mitsubishi has today confirmed it will be bringing the Lancer Sportback to the U.S. The hatchback bodystyle equips it to do battle on equal footing with Subaru’s Impreza and WRX hatches when it arrives in the U.S. around the middle of the year.

“American consumers are increasingly asking for fun, attractive, yet practical cars that complement their active and individual lifestyles,” said Dan Kuhnert, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Mitsubishi Motors North America.

Bentley’s fastest & most powerful production car teased in new video

The pressure to show an interest in the ecological impact of driving is extending ever-upwards, so high that even Bentley is working on a biofuel model. Due to arrive at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Bentley yesterday released a teaser shot of the car. Interestingly, the “Extreme Bentley” won’t be just a one-off concept as the car has already been described by the as a “production” model and latest reports indicate it will hit showrooms late in the year. Today the company released a new teaser video for the car, shown below.

Along with the teaser, Bentley released the statement: “On March 3, Bentley will reveal its fastest, most powerful production car ever.

Spy shots: BMW 7-series hybrid caught with no disguise

drive systems are finally making solid inroads into the upper strata of the luxury sedan segment, with ’s 7-series set to join the Mercedes-Benz S400 and Lexus LS 600hL later this year. The new 7-series was previewed as a concept at last year’s Paris Motor Show, but today we have new spy photos of the car completely free of disguise.

Mercedes released the first details for its S400 BlueHYBRID late last year, and confirmed the car for a mid-2009 launch date, putting it a half-step ahead of the 7-series, as the production 7-series is expected to go on sale late this year or in early 2010 after a debut in Frankfurt in September.

While Mercedes’ S400 BlueHYBRID features an electric drive system mated to a 3.5L V6 powerplant, ’s new Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid is based around the 4.4L 750i model.

Tesla funding shortfall delays new Model S plant

Electric car company Tesla Motors has had its fair share of successes on its route to its position at the leading edge of the new automotive industry, but this week it has suffered a setback that may take some time to overcome. The planned construction of a new manufacturing facility and headquarters in San Jose, California, have been delayed indefinitely due to a lack of venture capital funding.

The planned facility would have been built from the ground up at an undeveloped 89-acre plot near San Jose.
