The current Audi A8 has been on sale since 2003 and since that time has only received a minor facelift to keep it fresh alongside the Mercedes Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and recently revealed BMW 7-series. The minor styling changes implemented during the recent facelift will have to soldier on for a few more years as the next-generation ‘D4’ A8 is, according to latest reports, is expected to arrive in the second half of next year, following a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
A prototype for the car has already been spotted undergoing cold weather testing, hidden beneath the current D3 body.

Ford unveils automated parking system for Lincoln MKS and MKT

Ford is introducing an automatic parking system in the flagship Lincoln MKS sedan, as well as the upcoming Lincoln MKT seven-seat luxury crossover, to help drivers parallel park with ease. Known as ‘Active Park Assist’, the system will be available in mid-2009 as an option on both cars.
Earlier this year, we reported that Ford was planning on fitting around 90% of its vehicles with electronic steering, and that this electronic steering technology would facilitate the implementation of an automatic parking system, similar to that seen in luxury marques such as Lexus.
However, unlike camera-based systems used in Lexus models, ‘Active Park Assist’ uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal steering angle and steer the vehicle into a parking spot.
According to Ford, the technology is a “major leap forward in speed and ease of use compared with the camera-reliant systems offered by competitors” as the system requires less driver interface and reduces the risk of selecting a parking spot that is too tight, as well as having the ability to work in downhill parking situations.
Practically speaking, using the system itself is fairly simple - the driver activates the system by simply pressing an instrument panel button, which activates the ultrasonic sensors to measure and identify a feasible parallel parking space.

Developing an all-new iteration of a beloved car is no easy feat. Improving on the existing strengths while introducing as few new weaknesses as possible and at the same time improving value and performance is as tough a balancing act as you’re likely to find. But BMW thinks it’s done the job with the new Z4 and has released this behind-the-scenes look at how it did it.
The video depicts a prototype, completely unmasked, on a suspension simulator that’s able to compress weeks of driving into hours of testing.

Hummer’s troubled present and uncertain future are no impediment to tuners hell-bent on creating the most insane vehicles possible, and this blown V8 Hummer H3 is a prime example. Today the Germans at Geiger Cars, already known for some outlandish Hummer creations, have unleashed the H3 V8 Kompressor on an unsuspecting world.
The ‘baby Hummer’ is just a shade under 4,700lbs (2,131kg) in stock form, its 3.7L five-cylinder delivering yawn-inspiring performance with just 239hp (178kW) and 241lb-ft (327Nm) of torque on tap, though it ekes out a 14/18mpg city/highway rating.

Hartge BMW Z4 M with M5 V10 engine for sale

Shoehorning big engines into little roadsters is a classic operation - take the Breckland Beira V8 and Irmscher GT40 for a pair of recent examples - but the tuners at Hartge have accomplished what may be one of the most impressively OEM-looking engine swaps of recent times. The combination of BMW Z4 and M5/M6 5.0L V10 engine is inspirational, and with the car now for sale, it could be yours.
Fitting the big V10 into such a small package as a last-generation BMW Z4 may seem like an impossibility, but the photos illustrate the job was done with a level of expertise that could be mistaken for ease.

WRX Dyno Part II
EJD already shared Part 1 of their WRX extreme Dyno experiment with us and now they’re back with Part 2.
You know you’ve made yourself a serious bit of kit when you have to relocate the dyno because the noise levels are so high as to be a code violation! And then you have to fashion a smoke stack exhaust in your makeshift dyno space. They certainly get points for persistence. Oh, and the HP number ain’t too bad, either.
