The BMW X5 and X6 both deliver stunning performance, but it seems as though the stock performance isn’t quite up to par for the German automaker. Recently, BMW took the wraps off the M variants of the X5 and X6. Power is delivered via a new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces a staggering 555 horsepower and 500 lb. ft. of torque. Mated to a 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission, these M-inspired SUVs can sprint to 60 mph in well under 5 seconds. Look for more information when the X5 M and X6 M are unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

Official: Penske Automotive agrees to buy Saturn

June 6th, 2009

General Motors and Penske Automotive Group today confirmed details of a proposed transaction under which Penske would acquire the Saturn brand. If completed, the deal would save more than 350 dealerships and 13,000 jobs at Saturn and its retailers in the U.S., as well as preserving the brand itself.

The proposed transaction is part of GM’s rebuilding efforts outlined in the viability plan that was submitted to the U.S. government earlier this year. Under the terms in the memorandum of understanding, Penske would obtain the rights to the brand as well as certain other Saturn assets.

Spy shots: New BMW M7 or 7-series M styling pack?

June 6th, 2009

Up until the end of last year BMW was in the process of developing a brand new performance car positioned above the current 7-series flagship and destined to enter the premium four-door coupe segment. Then the global economic crisis hit and on the back of weak financial results BMW decided not to risk the launch of such an expensive model.

The car, which was expected to be called the 8-series, had been conceived as a super sedan for the company and was to draw its styling from the hugely successful CS concept first unveiled back in 2007.

GM in advanced talks with China’s Tengzhong over Hummer sale

June 6th, 2009

General Motors first confirmed the sale of its Hummer brand last August and followed up the announcement with the release of an official document for potential buyers just one month later. Poor sales, growing public concern for the environment and the recession have all added up to weaken Hummer’s sales chances, but there is hope that a company based in emerging markets like China, India or Russia could still be interested.

Today, GM, which entered bankruptcy proceedings earlier this week, confirmed that it has entered advanced talks with China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co.

Official: GM files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

June 6th, 2009

General Motors today announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy following an agreement reached with the U.S. Treasury and the governments of Canada and Ontario to accelerate its reinvention and create a leaner and stronger “New GM”. The filing is the third-largest in U.S. history and the largest-ever U.S. manufacturing bankruptcy, and involves up to $172.81 billion in debts.

If all goes to plan, the New GM is expected to launch in about 60 to 90 days as a separate and independent company from the current GM, with two distinct advantages: it will be built from only GM’s best brands and operations, and it will be supported by a stronger balance sheet due to a significantly lower debt burden and operating cost structure than before.
